Along with the tornado threat, storms will pack high winds, large hail, and torrential rain that can aggravate or initiate flooding problems. The threat of severe weather will continue from the second storm system Thursday. The threat zone will encompass much of the same areas as Tuesday and Wednesday but also extend farther to the east -- near the Mississippi River and east of the Mississippi in Illinois and Wisconsin.

If a tornado didn’t hit York County, what did? Severe Weather Center 9 explains:

Charlotte gets some kind of precipitation, on average, 105 days per year. Precipitation is rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground. In order for precipitation to be counted you have to get at least .01 inches on the ground to measure.

The swath of severe weather at risk Wednesday will be nearly identical to that of Tuesday and will extend from Nebraska and Iowa southward 900 miles to near the Big Bend area of the Rio Grande River in Texas. The vigil comes on the heels of the deadly shootout between law enforcement officers and a man they were trying to arrest. Four officers were killed in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect and four others were wounded. The suspect, who was being served a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, was also killed. The downpours will also bring the risk of flash flooding to some areas that were spared in recent days.

UPDATE: Rainfall expected during morning commute; severe storms to stay east

Live on WBTV, Tyler Wilson described officers streaming into his home, including one officer Wilson said appeared to be a sniper using his window during an active shootout Monday afternoon. His backyard is adjacent to the backyard of the one involved in the incident, Wilson said. (WBTV) - A neighbor said dozens of law enforcement officers used his home and backyard in a shootout that happened Monday afternoon in an east Charlotte neighborhood. "The overall coverage of severe weather on Thursday may be more localized when compared to Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as that of this past Friday and Saturday," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Benz said.

Wilson said the people who lived in the home involved in the incident had lived there for “a year and change” but otherwise didn’t know them. They occasionally had backyard parties, Wilson said. Small streams and rivers surged to moderate to major flood stage as a result of rounds of heavy rain in recent days. The rainfall will result in the middle segment of the Mississippi River, reaching a minor flood stage in some areas. The atmosphere was reloading Monday as the last gasp of thunderstorms pushed along the central Gulf Coast region with flooding downpours and gusty winds. Since Sunday, the group of storms has been responsible for 4-10 inches of rain and flash flooding in parts of Texas and Louisiana. Sadly, several people were killed, including an infant, in the violent storms and tornadoes from Friday to Sunday. Close to 1,000 incidents of severe weather occurred, including more than 125 tornadoes.

More severe weather expected in central U.S. this week

The overall threat of severe weather Tuesday afternoon and evening will extend as far to the south as west-central Texas. "This storm will bring a reprise of severe weather, mainly in the form of high winds and hail, but also the potential for tornadoes in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa on Tuesday afternoon and evening," Rayno said. Omaha, Nebraska, may be in the middle of the threat zone. Many of the same areas that were rocked and devastated by severe weather and flash flooding in recent days may be hit again or at least under the threat of severe weather, including tornadoes. Severe weather and the likelihood of more tornadoes will return to the central United States, spanning Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, AccuWeather meteorologists warn.

"We could be looking at more than a dozen tornadoes Wednesday in portions of the central and southern Plains," Rayno said. Weather is how the atmosphere is behaving and its effects upon life and human activities. Most people think of weather in terms of temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, brightness, visibility, wind, and atmospheric pressure. On average, there are 218 sunny days per year in Charlotte. Officers ordered Wilson and two others in the home to hide in a back room as the gunfire was ongoing.

The storms are likely to produce episodes of hail and strong winds. Storms and the setup that are potent enough to produce tornadoes will also bring many incidents of large hail, high winds and torrential downpours. The second of the two main storms this week will eject from the central Rockies Wednesday and is forecast to pivot more slowly northward over the northern Plains and Upper Midwest Thursday. Many people confuse weather and climate but they are different. Weather is the conditions of the atmosphere over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere is over long periods of time. Charlotte, North Carolina gets 43 inches of rain, on average, per year.

At around 4 p.m., Wilson said it had been largely quiet for the past hour. At quarter of 5 p.m., however, Wilson said he heard additional shots and officers walking around in his backyard. Wilson described the scene as “gunfire galore,” with officers army-crawling through his backyard, hiding behind trees, and jumping around bushes.

Rerouting of aircraft around hazardous weather is based largely on forecasts provided by the CWSU meteorologist. National products issued by the CWSU meteorologist include Center Weather Advisories (CWA) and Meteorological Impact Statements (MIS). The CWA is a short term advisory valid for two hours or less describing areas of hazardous weather in progress or forecast to develop. The MIS is a forecast product valid up to 12 hours describing areas of weather that may impact air traffic operations. AccuWeather has a moderate risk of severe weather, including tornadoes, in this area, as well as a small part of southeastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota, northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri Tuesday.
